Aeration and Overseeding

Aeration:
Core aeration is the mechanical removal of 2–4 inch soil plugs which relieves tightly packed soil, especially in high-traffic areas or heavy clay. This improves nutrient uptake which lets water, oxygen, and fertilizer reach the root zone more effectively. The results promote root growth, thickened grass and can help thin out thatch- which promotes a healthier, thicker lawn, particularly in heavy clay or high-traffic areas. It is best performed in spring or early fall. This allows for the lawn to stand up to environmental and natural stresses such as heat, insects and diseases.

  • Reduces Soil Compaction: Relieves dense soil, allowing roots to grow deeper.
  • Improves Nutrient/Water Uptake: Ensures water, fertilizer, and oxygen reach the root zone.
  • Manages Thatch: Reduces the layer of dead grass, preventing disease and insect issues.
  • Promotes Growth: Creates a better environment for grass to become thicker and healthier.

Overseeding:

Seeding right after aeration right after aeration is highly recommended. The small holes created by the aerator are ideal for trapping grass seeds, which gives them direct contact with the soil. The contact promotes improved germination rates and helps establish a thicker and healthier lawn. When you overseed immediately after aeration:

  • Seeds settle into the aeration holes, reducing their exposure to elements that could wash them away.
  • Soil structure provides a protective environment, improving seed-to-soil contact.
  • Germination is optimized, filling bare or thin patches with new grass growth.

Fertilizing after Seeding:

Fertilizing after seeding provides newly planted grass with the nutrients it needs to grow quickly.

  • Essential nutrients: Starter fertilizers help the grass seedlings develop deep and strong roots.
  • Faster establishment: Accelerated grass growth improves density, making it harder for weeds to grow.
  • Improved lawn health: Proper fertilization enhances the lawn’s ability to resist drought, stress, pests, and weeds.

Wait 24-48 hours after seeding to fertilize. Then water the lawn lightly and frequently to keep the soil moist. Avoid overwatering because this can displace the seeds and fertilizer, sabotaging all your efforts. As the seeds start growing, water less frequently. Refrain from mowing for at least three weeks from when you seeded to allow the grass to grow and establish itself.
